ALMOND, DWARF RUSSIAN (Prunus tenella) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 4-5 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. Attractive upright shrub with masses of single rose-pink appearing in early spring. Narrow leaves 1-3” long. An excellent ornamental shrub for cold climates. Produces a small disc-shaped fuzzy greenish fruit in fall. Can sucker aggressively and would be useful for bank stabilization.
ALMOND, PINK FLOWERING (Prunus glandulosa ‘Rosea Plena’) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 5-6 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Pink, carnation-like flowers appear all along the stems of this shrub in early spring, followed by bright green leaves. Use near a house or patio to enjoy the blooms in the spring.
APACHE PLUME (Fallugia paradoxa) Ht 3-5 ft, Spd 3-5 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (XERIC). Attractive, fine textured, western native shrub. Excellent choice for dry, sunny locations. White rose-like spring flowers followed by round, feathery silver-pink seed heads all summer. Though the foliage is semi evergreen it is inconspicuous throughout the winter.
BARBERRY, BURGUNDY CAROUSEL (Berberis thunbergii ‘Bailtwo’) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 4-5 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water needs. This is a selection of Japanese Barberry sporting slightly larger burgundy-purple leaves. An attractive accent shrub. Slightly wider than tall spreading habit.
BARBERRY, CONCORDE (Berberis thunbergii ‘Concorde’) Ht 1½-2 ft, Spd 2½-3 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water. The Concorde Barberry is a dwarf globe-shaped barberry with deep purple, velvety foliage and red new growth making it an attractive plant for the perennial garden or the front of a shrub border. There are sparse red fruit. It can tolerate dry conditions.

BARBEREY, EMERALD CAROUSEL (Berberis x ‘Tara’) Ht 4-5 ft, Spd 4-5 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. A cross between Japanese Green Barberry and Korean Barberry introduced by Bailey Nurseries. A compact plant with glossy dark green foliage. The outstanding orange to red fall color appears early and remains late before leaves drop. A better barberry choice for more alkaline sites.
BARBERRY, GOLDEN ROCKET (Berberis thunbergii ‘Golden Rocket’) Ht 3-5ft, Spd: 1-2ft. Full sun, low to moderate water. It is a narrow, upright growing, deciduous shrub with showy, bright yellow foliage. Pale yellow, insignificant flowers in spring are followed by bright red berries in fall which persist through the winter. The berries attract birds and other wildlife through the fall and winter.
BARBERRY, HELMOND PILLAR (Berberis thunbergii ‘Helmond Pillar’) Ht 4-5 ft, Spd 1-2 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water. This barberry has reddish-purple leaves that will turn a brilliant red color in the fall. There are tiny sharp thorns on the red bark. The small yellow flowers appear in early spring but are often hidden by the foliage. It has a noticeable erect and narrow form maturing to 5’ tall and less then 2’ wide.
BARBERRY, JAPANSES REDLEAF (Berberis thunbergii ‘Atropurpurea’) Ht 4-6 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water. Showy reddish-purple summer foliage. Small yellow flowers appear in spring followed by persistent red fruits. Irregular rounded habit with thorny branches. Orange to red fall color. Does best in well drained soil.
BARBERRY, ORANGE ROCKET (Berberis thunbergii ‘Orange Rocket’) Ht 3-5ft, Spd 1.5 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water. Vibrant coral-orange new foliage ages to mid-green, then turns ruby red in autumn. This award winning, compact, upright growing deciduous shrub has a vigorous growth habit and improved resistance to rust. Use to brighten the landscape in mass plantings, as a specimen plant, or in a container.
BARBERRY, ROSE GLOW (Berberis thunbergii ‘Rose Glow’) Ht 4-5 ft, Spd 4-5 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water. Selection chosen for its unique foliage. New growth appears with a pink variegation that matures to a darker rose-red. Deer tend to stay away (or at least they used to!)

BROOM, ROYAL GOLD COMPACT (Genista Tinctroia ‘Royal Gold’) Ht 1-2 ft, Spd 2 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Green leaves with yellow flowers. Compact low shrub that will do well in rocky/course soils.
BROOM, SPANISH GOLD (Cytisus purgans ‘Spanish Gold’) Ht 2-3 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Full sun to part shade. Tight, dense broom with bright yellow flowers in late May to early June. Selected from the Alpine Gardens and Denver Botanic Gardens. Native to North Africa and Southern Europe. Far superior to other brooms available because of minimal winterkill and ability to thrive in heavy soils. Benefits from some winter water. Plant select in 2000.
BUCKTHORN, COLUMNAR (Rhamnus frangula ‘ Columnaris’) Ht 12-15 ft, Spd 5-6 ft. Full Sun, low to moderate water needs. Tall, columnar shrub with handsome glossy green foliage and purple fruit in late summer. Yellow fall color. The unique vertical habit of this shrub makes it great for a dense hedge or screen. In spite of its name, this shrub is thornless.
BUCKTHORN, SMITH’S (Rhamnus smithii) Ht 6-10 ft, Spd 10-14 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). A native of central Colorado. Handsome, glossy dark green leaves and black fruits to 1.5” long. Tolerant of dry conditions. Golden-yellow fall color. There is a very nice specimen at Denver Botanic Gardens. Plant Select designate.
BUCKTHORN, TALLHEDGE GLOSSY (Rhamnus frangula ‘Columnaris’) Ht 8-12 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. These shrubs are multi-stemmed and upright in form with medium texture. They have a dark green, shiny leaf. Flowers have an extremely long bloom time. The fruit is a showy reddish-black to purplish-black. Fall color is yellow.
BUFFALOBERRY, SILVER (Shepherdia argentea) Ht 10-15 ft, Spd 10-12 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Tree-like shrub with silvery foliage. The branch tips are generally thorny. Its small edible, orange-red berries can be used to make jelly or left as a treat for birds. Needs male and female plants to produce fruit.
BURNING BUSH (Euonymus alatus) Ht 10-15 ft, Spd 10-12 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. This shrub has interesting winged stems with a dense form. Dark green leaves turn a radiant, show-stopping crimson in the fall. The fruits look like red popcorn and are showy throughout much of the winter. This is a favorite large accent plant that can be pruned into an interesting small tree. It is tough and disease resistant.
BURNING BUSH, DWARF (Euonymus alata ‘Compactus’) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 5-6 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A more dwarf form of the species. Crimson fall foliage. Dark green leaves turning a radiant, show-stopping crimson in fall. Fruits look like red popcorn and are showy though much of the winter. Excellent use as a hedge specimen. Tough and disease resistant.

A shrub that does well in a variety of soils and forms a striking vase-shaped mound. The twigs are long and thin, giving the plant a wide spreading and pendulous habit. The foliage is blue gray or sometimes silver, and finely textured. Fragrant early June flowers are a bright lilac and spiral along the previous year’s branches in candy-cane fashion. CHERRY, CANADA RED (Prunus virginiana ‘Canada Red’) Ht 20-25 ft, Spd 18-20 ft. Low to moderate water needs, full to part sun. New growth is bright green, turning to burgundy-red as the leaves mature. Fragrant white flowers in 3”-6” long drooping racemes appear in late April to early May. The tart but edible small fruit ripens to black in late summer. An attractive, fast growing plant, great for a quick screen. May be trained into a tree.
CHERRY, NANKING (Prunus tomentosa) Ht 8-10 ft, Spd 10-15 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A densely branched large shrub with pubescent green foliage. Edible red fruit that attracts birds follows showy white spring flowers. The tan to red-brown bark is exfoliating. Interesting when used in mass plantings or pruned to a small tree. A picturesque large shrub that should be used more.
CHOKEBERRY, BLACK (Aronia melanocarpa) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 5-6 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Small white flowers in May followed by ¼” small black fruits that may persist into winter. Summer foliage is glossy green turning to a radiant red in fall.
CHOKEBERRY, IROQUOIS BEAUTY BLACK (Aronia melanocarpa ‘Iroquois Beauty’) Ht 3-5 ft, Spd 3-5 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. This is a more compact form of the Black Chokeberry with great interest throughout the seasons. It has beautiful white flowers in the spring followed by an abundance of black berries in the summer. The fall color is a beautiful wine-red. Plant can sucker for naturalized look, or can be pruned if growth needs to be restricted.
CHOKEBERRY, PURPLE (Aronia x prunifolia) Ht 8-12 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. A hybrid between A. arbutifolia and A. melanocarpa thought to be naturally occurring. Displays hybrid vigor, as it grows taller than both its parents. White flowers bloom in terminal clusters in early May, followed by purple fruit in fall. Outstanding red fall color
CHOKECHERRY, GREEN (Prunus virginiana) Ht 15-25 ft, Spd 15-20 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Large native shrub. Fragrant white flowers in pendulous racemes appear in early May, followed by edible black fruit that attracts birds. Fast growing plant that spreads by suckers. Useful as a quick screen.
CHOKECHERRY, YELLOW FRUITED (Prunus virginiana ‘Yellow Fruited’) Ht 15-20 ft, Spd 15-20 ft. Low to moderate water needs, full sun. A green-leaved selection of chokecherry having bright yellow edible fruits in late July and August that give the plant the appearance of a second bloom. This large hardy shrub was first discovered in Wyoming and then rediscovered at the USDA Experimental Station in Cheyenne.
CISTENA, PRUNUS (Prunus x cistena) Ht 6-8 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Low to moderate water needs, full to part sun. Can be a large multi-stemmed shrub. Denser and more compact than Newport. Leaves are a brighter purple. An excellent shrub for our climate.
CORALBERRY, HANCOCK (Symphoricarpos x chenaultii ‘Hancock’) Ht 2-3 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun to part shade. Low to moderate water needs. Light blue-green, fine textured foliage with small, pink spring flowers followed by red berries that hold into winter. The spreading habit creates an excellent groundcover for erosion control on banks and slopes. Benefits from aggressive rejuvenation pruning every few years.
CORALBERRY, RED (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 4-5 ft. Full sun to mostly shade, low to moderate water needs. Upright, arching growth habit with slender branches. Profusion of creamy white summer flowers. Heavily fruited with large clusters of ¼” coral red berries that last all winter. Good for erosion control, or groundcover.
COTONEASTER, CORAL BEAUTY (Cotoneaster dammeri ‘Coral Beauty’) Ht 1 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. This low-growing shrub is a great ground cover. It has long prostrate branches with dark green foliage and white flowers in the spring. Showy dark red berries add color in the fall and winter. This can be considered an evergreen.
COTONEASTER, CRANBERRY (Cotoneaster apiculatus) Ht 2-3 ft, Spd 5-7 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A cotoneaster with small glossy green leaves on arching branches. Large red berries in late summer. Orange-red fall color. Has a fine texture when in leaf and a coarse silhouette in winter. Use in masses as a ground cover or as an accent plant.
COTONEASTER, HEDGE (Cotoneaster lucidus) Ht 6-8 ft, Spd 5-8 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Large shrub with glossy dark green foliage and upright growth. Black fruits follow small inconspicuous pink spring flowers. Outstanding orange-red fall color. Tolerates shade well. Good screen or hard hedge that can be pruned for a formal look.
COTONEASTER, SPREADING (Cotoneaster divaricatus) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. An ornamental shrub with arching branches. Summer leaf color is an attractive, glossy dark green. Fall color can be a striking combination of yellow, orange, and red. Small pink flowers appear in late spring but tend to be hidden behind the leaves. The small bright red fruit ripens in September and persists into late fall. Useful as a screen or large hedge.
COTONEASTER, SZECHUAN FIRE (Cotoneaster ignavus) Ht 6-8 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. An extremely hardy cotoneaster with dark red ¼” fruit. The leaves are heavily pubescent, giving them a blue cast. Yellow fall color. Selected from the USDA Experimental Station in Cheyenne, WY and a favorite of Mr. Howard who was a superintendent of the station. A great hardy cotoneaster.
CREAMBUSH (Holodiscus discolor) Ht 5-7 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Northwest native plant with creamy white flowers in panicles, blooming in midsummer. Erect to arching basal stems with reddish brown exfoliating bark. Hairy leaves are light green, broadly ovate and coarsely toothed. Flowers have a sweet aromatic cream-like scent. Reddish tan seed heads in fall. The wood had many uses for the native peoples of the Northwest, as well as the flowers, which were used medicinally. Drought resistant, but if given regular water may get larger that the listed size.
CURRANT, ALPINE (Ribes alpinum) Ht 3-5 ft, Spd 3-5 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Compact rounded bush excellent for small hedges or as a backdrop for flowers. Requires very little shearing to maintain a neat, tidy appearance. Glossy dark green summer foliage.
CURRANT, GOLDEN (Ribes aureum ) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 5-6 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (XERIC). Cinnamon-scented, yellow flowers in May. Green, lobed leaves turn scarlet in fall. Makes a nice accent or hedge.
CURRANT, HARDY RED FLOWERING (Ribes x gordonianum) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (XERIC). A hardy red flowering currant blooming in April with pendulous racemes up to 6” in length. Dark green leaves and fruitless.
CURRANT, WAX (Ribes cereum) Ht 2-4 ft, Spd 2-4 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (XERIC). This is a densely branched native shrub with gray-green leaves. The bright red fruit ripens in late summer and is prized by the bears. This selection of currant has minimal fall color but useful for mass plantings especially for naturalized areas. It tolerates dry conditions well.
DAPHNE, CAROL MACKIE (Daphne x burkwoodi ‘Carol Mackie’) Ht 3-5 ft, Spd 3-5 ft. Part shade to shade, low to moderate water needs. A densely branched, semi-evergreen shrub. Narrow medium green leaves are edged in cream white. Clusters of intensely fragrant, ½ “ tubular pink flowers bloom in April. Fruit is 1/3” red berry. Does not like to be planted in hot-spots such as south or west exposures. Plant select 1997.
DOGWOOD, BAILEY REDTWIG (Cornus sericea var. ‘baileyi’) Ht 8-10 ft, Spd 8-10 ft. Full sun to part shade, moderate water needs. A large shrub with medium green foliage and dense, upright growth. Blue-black fruits follow cream white late spring flowers. Stems turn a showy burgundy in winter. Burgundy-red fall color. Good screen or hardy hedge that can be clipped for a formal look.
DOGWOOD, ISANTI (Cornus sericea ‘Isanti’) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 8-10 ft. Full sun to part shade, moderate water needs. It is a denser and lower growing dogwood than the Bailey Redtwig with the same bright red stems in winter. Creamy white flowers bloom in late spring, followed by abundant white fruit. Fall color is a dark purple-red. This combination makes for a striking winter silhouette.
DOGWOOD, IVORY HALO (Cornus alba ‘Bailhalo’) Ht 5-6 ft, Spd 5-6 ft. Part Shade, moderate water needs. A selection of Variegated Dogwood with the same attractive variegation and winter twig color but has a more compact form.

If there is another variety of elder planted nearby this is considered a pollinator.

This forsythia was discovered in Korea by Spring Meadow Nursery. The flower buds are not as hardy and the ‘Northern Gold’, but this plant is worth a try for its striking variegation.

A seedling ‘accidentally’ found while collecting cuttings of Blue Velvet honeysuckle at the Cheyenne station. It blooms with profuse medium pink flowers in the spring. An added bonus to this honeysuckle is that it is resistant to the witches’ broom aphid. This excellent plant was originally referred to as ‘Brand X’ but is far superior to the normal generic brands.

Spirea that forms a low spreading mat of slender, dense branches covered by medium green small leaves. Clusters of light pink flowers are borne in corymbs midsummer. SPIREA, DARK KNIGHT (Caryopteris x clandonensis ‘Dark Knight’) Ht 3-5 ft, Spd 2-3 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Form of Blue Mist Spirea with darker gray-green foliage and darker blue flowers. An attractive alternative.
SPIREA, FAIRY QUEEN (Spiraea trilobata ‘Fairy Queen’) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A compact spirea with dark green lobed leaves. Profuse flat topped flowers in May and June. Resembles a compact form of VanHoute Spirea. Develops an attractive red fall color.
SPIREA, FROEBEL (Spiraea x bumalda ‘Froebeli’) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. This low growing shrub boasts flat clusters of pink flowers in late May or June. Good for hedge or foundation planting. New foliage appears as purplish tips on a green background. Purplish red fall color. Best when pruned back for flowering each spring. Stays more compact than the Anthony Waterer Spirea.

Has an arching habit that ultimately becomes more broad then tall. In late April to early May there are cascades of abundant small white flowers that bloom all along the branches. An excellent medium sized shrub.

The new growth emerges red in the spring and matures into a rich bronze, re-tipped foliage. The clusters of deep pink flowers cover the plant in early summer and contrast nicely with the leaves. The foliage turns a russet color in the fall that remains well into November.

The new growth appears with a purple tint, matures to dark green, then takes on a lovely burgundy color for fall. Compact rounded habit.

An extremely hardy large shrub with attractive dark green compound leaves. Large plumes of creamy-white flowers up to 1’ in length bloom in midsummer. Prune out older stems in early spring to promote blooming, or periodically cut down to the ground line. Maroon fall color. Makes a great backdrop plant.

A prostrate form of R. triloba which forms a dense groundcover and will cascade over walls. Much more prostate then the more common Gro-Low Sumac. Inconspicuous flowers, and no apparent fruits. They turn a yellow to russet color in the fall. This form was discovered growing on limestone outcroppings near Littlefield, Texas.

SUMAC, FRAGRANT (Rhus aromatica) Ht 6 ft, Spd 5 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Aromatic shrub with small, yellow flowers in May, followed by small red berries. Brilliant, atutumn foliage.
SUMAC, GRO-LOW (Rhus aromatica ‘Gro-Low’) Ht 2-3 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Tiny, inconspicuous yellow flowers in May are followed by small red berries. Brilliant scarlet to orange autumn foliage. Leaves have a pungent citrus-like fragrance. Its low, spreading form and fast growth rate make this plant excellent for mass plantings as a ground cover, or for erosion control.
SUMAC, ROCKY MOUNTAIN (Rhus glabra cismontana) Ht 3-6 ft, Spd 3-10 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Native shrub with shiny dark green leaves turning brilliant red in fall. Decorative red fruit. A western sub-species that grows to only half the height of the species. This hardy plant suckers to form colonies making it a great groundcover.
SUMAC, SMOOTH (Rhus glabra) Ht 10-12 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Very similar to Staghorn Sumac except the leaves and branches are not pubescent. More shrubby than other sumacs. Brilliant red leaves and velvety dark red fruits in autumn. Tolerates alkaline soils. They will spread making them well suited for group plantings.
SUMAC, STAGHORN (Rhus typhina) Ht 15-20 ft, Spd 12-16 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Large compounded leaves give this plant a tropical look. Pyramidal clusters of velvety crimson fruits appear in late August and persist into winter. The branches are covered with dense, velvety hair and resemble stag’s horns, giving rise to the common name. The fall color is a brilliant red. Spreads by suckers.

Three-lobed dark green leaves turn red to orange in the fall. Bright red berries follow dainty yellow flowers. Medium spreading plant that makes an irregular hedge. Height will very depending on available water.
SUMAC, TIGER EYES CUTLEAF (Rhus typhina ‘Baitiger’ (PP 16,185)) Ht 6-8 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Full sun, moderate water needs. A Bailey Nursery introduction, Tiger Eyes is a beautiful golden-leaved form of the Cutleaf Staghorn Sumac. The new growth is a lively green, quickly changing to yellow. Both of the colors contrast nicely with the rosy-pink leaf stems. The Fall color is a striking red to orange.

The Alleghany is a beautiful rounded shrub with rich dark green leaves that remain evergreen well into most winters. VIBURNUM, SARCOXIE (Viburnum x ‘Sarcoxie’) Ht 6-8 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Full sun to part shade, moderate water needs. This is an extremely fragrant, semi-evergreen Viburnum that blooms earlier then the V. burkwoodii and the V. carlesii. It is also hardier. It is a cross between V. burkwoodii and V. carlesii that was introduced by Sarcoxie Nurseries in Sarcoxie MO in 1972. It is a rare plant in the trade but more will be produced in the coming years.
VIBURNUM, WENTWORTH AMERICAN CRANBERRY (Viburnum trilobum ‘Wentworth’) Ht 10-12 ft, Spd 8-10 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. Cultivar of V. trilobum selected for its profuse flowering and heavier fruit set. Fruit changes from orange to bright red as it matures with an excellent flavor, ideal for preserves. Fall color is a beautiful red.
WAXFLOWER (Jamesia Americana) Ht 3-5 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (XERIC). This is a charming native plant that grows among boulders in a shady location along the eastern slope of the Rockies. Thick, 1” oblong leaves are green above and whitish below. Orange to rosy-pink fall color. Dainty, waxy white flowers in showy clusters appear in late spring. It prefers dry soils with good drainage.
WEIGELA, DROPMORE PINK (Weigela florida ‘Dropmore Pink’) Ht 4-6 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A hardy weigela introduced form the Morden Research Station in Canada. Dark green summer foliage and trumpet-shaped rose pink flowers in June. Has proven, so far, to be the hardiest weigela in our tests.
WEIGELA, RED PRINCE (Weigela florida ‘Red Prince’) Ht 4-6 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A small shrub that is almost as wide as it is tall. The trumpet shaped flowers demonstrates a rich red color that does not fade. Recurrent flowering particularly if there is sparse late spring bloom. The leaves are dark green on slender stems with a coarse winter texture. This shrub is useful in mass plantings or as a background plant in a shrub border.
WEIGELA, JAVA RED (Weigela florida ‘Java Red’) Ht 4 ft, Spd 5 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Deep green foliage with an overcast of purplish red. Red buds open to a deep pink bloom in spring.
WEIGELA, WINE & ROSES (Weigela floria ‘Alexandra’ PP10772)) Ht 4-5 ft, Spd 3-5 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water needs. A low growing rounded shrub. Notable for its very dark burgundy-purple foliage. Dark pink flowers show off against the foliage in early summer.
WILLOW, BLUE CREEK (Salix arenaria) Ht 2-4 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, moderate water needs. Densely pubescent leaves on this low-growing shrub give the Blue Creek a unique silvery velvet appearance in the spring. The leaves turn gray-green as they mature. Also know in the trade as S. repens argentea. Some tip dieback can occur during the winter.
WILLOW, BLUE STEM (Salix irrorata) Ht 8-10 ft, Spd. 16-18 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, moderate water needs. The new stems emerge a blue purple color with a waxy bloom that gives attractive winter texture. The narrow leaves are medium in size with a glossy green top and blue green undersides.
WILLOW, COYOTE (Salix exigua) Ht 8-10 ft, Spd 6-12 ft. Tolerates full sun, moderate water needs. Shrubby native willow growing along the banks and sandbars of rivers up to 9000 ft. Fine textured silver green leaves and yellow stems.
WILLOW, DWARF ARTIC (Salix purpurea ‘Nana’) Ht 6-8 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, moderate water needs. This shrub has a rounded, dense form with linear gray-green foliage. They have supple, slender stems that are purplish in color when young. Branches turn reddish as they mature providing winter interest. This makes an attractive hedge plant.
WILLOW, FRENCH PUSSY (Salix caprea) Ht 15-20 ft, Spd 8-12 ft. Tolerates full sun, moderate water needs. Hardy upright shrub best known for large silvery catkins which appear before the leaves in the spring and are used for indoor decoration. Grows best in moist soils, but once established, does well on drier sites. Fast growing. Makes good privacy hedge.

JUNIPER, ARMSTRONG (Juniperus chinensis ‘Armstrongii’) Ht 4-5 ft, Spd 8-12 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). The gray-green foliage has a fine lacy texture and holds its color well in the winter. The branching form is horizontal with a slight arch. Selected by Armstrong Nurseries in 1932.
JUNIPER, BAR HARBOR (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Bar Harbor’) Ht 6-12 in, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). A low growing spreading form that hugs the ground. Summer foliage is a soft gray-blue becoming a silvery plum color in winter.
JUNIPER, BLUE STAR (Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Star’) Ht 2-3 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). This is a very attractive, dwarf juniper that is useful in rock gardens. It has an irregular growth habit with spreading and mounding branches. It is a very slow growing juniper. The steel blue awl-shaped needles are star like in appearance. It needs protection from intense winter sun.
JUNIPER, BROADMOOR (Juniperus sabina ‘Broadmoor’) Ht 1-2 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Bright medium green foliage. Dense mounding form with horizontally spreading branches that make an interesting ground cover.
JUNIPER, BLUE CHIP (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Blue Chip’) Ht 8-12 in, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Blue foliage on a prostrate spreader with a high center. The branchlets are upright giving a more feathery appearance. The winter color is an attractive silvery plum-purple.
JUNIPER, BUFFALO (Juniperus sabina ‘Buffalo’) Ht 1-2 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Feathery, bright green foliage. Mounding habit. A female which produces attractive blue berries. Probably one of the most planted juniper on the face of the earth.
JUNIPER, CALGARY CARPET (Juniperus Sabina ‘Monna’) Ht 1-2 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). A low growing broad spreading selection with light green, feathery foliage. The branches radiate out from the center of the plant creating a spray effect. “Sierra Spreader” is another common name.
JUNIPER, COMPACT PFITZER (Juniperus chinensis ‘Pfiteriana Compacta’) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 6-12 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Medium, compact, spreading Pfitzer with light green awl-like foliage. Dense form with lower more horizontally spreading branches then other Pfitzers. One of the most prickly Pfitzers, making it a great choice for traffic control.
JUNIPER, EFFUSA (Juniperus communis var. depressa ‘Effusa’) Ht 9-12 in, Spd 6-12 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (XERIC). Effusa is a broad low prostrate juniper. The small needles are a rich dark green underneath with a very prominent silver band above. It will hold its color fairly well in winter.
JUNIPER, GOLD LACE (Juniperus chinensis ‘Gold Lace’) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). This juniper is considered a derivative of the Pfitzer Juniper, but doesn’t usually get as large. It has a vibrant yellow color with a brighter yellow color in full sun. It is sometimes referred to as the most golden of all junipers. Great plant as a specimen or as mass planting.
JUNIPER, GOLD TIP (Juniperus chinensis ‘Pfitzeriana Aurea’) Ht 5-8 ft, Spd 8-12 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Gray-green foliage with bright golden yellow new growth tips. A larger and more arching juniper than Old Gold Juniper. Color becomes yellow-green in winter.
JUNIPER, GREEN SARGENT (Juniperus chinesis ‘Green Sargent’) Ht 2-3 ft, Spd 8-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Low spreading, densely branched. A beautiful Juniper for our area. This juniper has a soft needle-like foliage with showy blue berries. Great for a ground cover and mass plantings.
JUNIPER, HOLBERT (Juniperus chinensis ‘Holbert’) Ht 2-4 ft, Spd 6-12 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Silvery-blue foliage on a low-growing, widely spreading form. Retains its attractive thought he winter. Mostly scale-type foliate. A beautiful and underused spreader.
JUNIPER, HUGHES (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Hughes’) Ht 12-24 in, Spd 6-12 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Silvery-blue foliage that may develop a light purplish-bronze tint in the winter. Radial branch pattern. This is a very fast growing spreader.
JUNIPER, NEW BLUE TAMI (Juniperus sabina var. tamariscifolia ‘New Blue’) Ht 18-24 in, Spd: 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). The New Blue Tami Juniper is bluer in color then the Tami juniper. This plant forms a wide mound that gives a nice variety to the flatter growing junipers.
JUNIPER, OLD GOLD (Juniperus chinensis ‘Old Gold’) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 6-12 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). A juniper with a compact form, which also boasts a slight graceful arching to the tips of the branches. New growth has a bright golden-yellow color that deepens in the winter. Full sun will result in its best color.
JUNIPER, PRINCE OF WALES (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Prince of Wales’) Ht 4-6 in, Spd 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (XERIC). An attractive low growing mat forming juniper. It has dense, medium green foliage with a purple cast in the winter. Center of plant opens with age.

PINE, MOPS MUGO (Pinus mugo ‘Mops’) Ht 2.5-3 ft, Spd 2.5-3 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). A small and densely compact selection of Mugo Pine. It will not require any candle pruning to keep the compact globe shape. It is a great plant for a rock garden.
PINE, SLOWMOUND MUGO (Pinus mugo‘Slowmound’) Ht 3-3.5 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water needs. This is another dense compact form of Mugo Pine that gets slightly larger then the Mops Mugo. It is a very slow growing pine that is ideal for tight spots.

This evergreen used in rock gardens, mass plantings and in groupings. Also makes a great container plant and is excellent for use as a bonsai plant. Has salt tolerance and can withstand some drought.

This variety is named for the waxy winter buds that make a bright contrast to the dark foliage. It is a little larger and faster growing than other true-dwarf selections.
SPRUCE, BIRDS NEST (Picea abies ‘Nidiformis’ ) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 4-5 ft. Full sun or part shade, low to moderate water needs. The Birds Nest Spruce is a slow growing dense shrub. It has a finer texture then most spruce. The name ‘Birds Nest’ comes from the trees habit of developing a depression in the middle of the plant. The needles are a green color with more of a lime-green new growth. Typically will keep its branches all the way to the ground.
SPRUCE, COMPACT COLORADO BLUE SPRUCE (Picea pungens ‘Compacta’) Ht 6-8 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water needs. Add a touch or the Rocky Mountains in your garden. ‘Compacta’ is a silvery-blue, slow growing from of Colorado Blue Spruce that develops into a broad cone as it matures. This extremely hardy spruce performs best in a sunny location. Use this where you don’t have the room for a full-sized tree.

SPRUCE, MESA VERDE (Picea pungens ‘Mesa Verde’) Ht 10in-1.5 ft, Spd 5-6 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A unique selection of Colorado Spruce with a groundcover habit. Medium green needles on stiff radiating horizontal branches. Will tolerate a full south or west exposure. Great alternative to junipers in areas where a specialty conifer is desired but conditions exclude the shade preferring varieties.
YEW, DENSE SPREADING (Taxus x media ‘Densiformis’) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water. This evergreen shrub has dark green foliage with emerald colored new growth in the spring. It has a dense mounding growth habit and can tolerate shearing. The female cultivar produces scarlet berries instead of cones. It can be used for a border, hedge or screen.
YEW, HICK’S UPRIGHT (Taxus x media ‘Hicksii’) Ht 8-10 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water. This evergreen shrub has glossy dark green foliage on long upright branches. It has a columnar growing habit. It is an excellent selection for taller hedges, or as accent plants. A bright red seed appears in late summer, the seeds are poisonous to humans.

BOXWOOD, GREEN VELVET (Buxus ‘Green Velvet’) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water. The Green Velvet Boxwood maintains its rich green color throughout the winter. It will maintain the green color best if protected from winter sun and wind. It has a nice round form when not pruned back.
EUONYMUS, EMERALD GAIETY (Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald Gaiety’ (PP1,960)) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water. Dwarf dense evergreen shrub with mounding habit. The dark green leaves have well-defined white borders. They are a slow growing shrub but useful for some color in shady areas.
EUONYMUS, EMERALD ‘N GOLD (Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald N Gold’(PP 2,231)) Ht 1.5-2 ft, Spd 2-3 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water. Tightly branched erect habit that forms a low, mounding evergreen shrub. The foliage is emerald green with yellow margins that turn pink to reddish in winter. In dense shade, leaf margins may become more light-green than yellow. This is a slow growing plant.
EUONYMUS, MANHATTAN (Euonymus kiautschovicus ‘Manhattan’) Ht 4-6 ft, Spd 4-6 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water. Upright growing evergreen shrub with very glossy, dark green, 2”-2.5” leaves, which are larger that those of other evergreen Euonymus. Moderate to fast grower. Needs to be planted in location protected from winter sun.

A vigorous and hardy Euonymus fortunei cultivar with an upright form and dark green glossy leaves. Prefers a north or east exposure. Can be trimmed into a shrub, or will climb on supports. Moderately fast growth rate.
HOLLY, COMPACT OREGON GRAPE (Mahonia aquifolium ‘Compacta’) Ht 2-3 ft, Spd 4-5 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water needs. This is a more compact form of the Oregon Grape Holly, with a spreading habbit. A great foundation plant for a protected shady spot. The leaflets are glossy green, spiny-toothed on an upright shrub. The young growth is bronze-red. Yellow flower clusters appear in late spring followed by blue-black fruit.
HOLLY, CREEPING OREGON GRAPE (Mahonia repens) Ht 12-18 in, Spd 3-4 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water needs. This Rocky Mountain native makes an excellent groundcover, spreading through underground stolons. Evergreen leaves turn red in fall and make wonderful Christmas decorations. Yellow flowers appear in late May to June followed by blue berries.
HOLLY, OREGON GRAPE (Mahonia aquifolium) Ht 3-6 ft, Spd 3-5 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water needs. The leaflets are glossy green, spiny-toothed on an upright shrub. The young growth is bronze-red. Yellow flower clusters appear in late spring followed by blue-black fruit. The height and form can be controlled by pruning. This plant can spread by underground stems. A north or east exposure is preferable.
KINNIKINNICK, SQUEEK POINT (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi ‘Squeek Point’) Ht 6-12 in, Spd 4-5 ft. Full to part shade, low to moderate water. Squeek point is a Colorado selection of Kinnikinnick that has better evergreen color than the straight species. Pink flowers are followed by berries. It’s unique name comes from the location at a tight corner in the road (where many people make their breaks squeak!)
MANZANITA, CASCADE (Arctostaphylos x coloradensis ‘Cascade’) Ht 1-2 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (XERIC). This is a selection of Manzanita with a pronounced cascading habit and grows slightly larger than the Mock-Bearberry. It has smooth cinnamon-red to purplish exfoliating bark and bright green oval leaves. Alan Taylor made this selection, it is known for its pink flowers that appear in late April to early May that are followed by a red berry in September-October.

It has smooth cinnamon-red to purplish exfoliating bark with oval green leaves. The flowers appear in April to May and are followed by a red berry in September-October.

A drought tolerant plant with a lush green appearance.

Dense prostrate plants have smooth cinnamon-red to purplish exfoliating bark with bright green oval shaped leaves. The flowers appear in late spring and are followed by a dry red berry in September-October.

YUCCA, BANANA (Yucca baccata) Ht 3-4 ft, Spd 3-4 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). This yucca has thick, agave-like, evergreen leaves with huge spikes of ivory white flowers in the spring. It is known as the Banana Yucca because of its banana-shaped and flavored (the flesh is edible!) seed pods.
YUCCA, BRIGHT EDGE (Yucca filamentosa ‘Bright Edge’) Ht 2.5-3 ft, Spd 2.5-3 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). The bright edge yucca has yellow margins with curled filaments on the leaves. The large panicles of white flowers grow above the spiky leaves. This is a great plant for a xeric garden.
YUCCA, RED (Hesperaloe parviflora ) Ht 3-5 ft, Spd 2-4 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). This plant tolerates a wide range of temperatures and needs very little water. It has long, thin, leaves coming out of the center of the plant making it look like a fountain. The pink to red flowers look similar to coral bells. The flowers can last May through October. This plant is not actually a Yucca, the leaves have fibrous threads along the edges and are not spine-tipped.
YUCCA, SOAPWEED (Yucca glauca) Ht 2-3 ft, Spd 3 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs (XERIC). Native plant of the Rocky Mountains. Sharp-pointed, narrow, bluish-green leaves with curling fibers on leaf margins. Greenish white flowers bloom in spring on 3’ to 4’ spikes.
VINES
CLEMATIS, POLISH SPIRIT (Clematis ‘Polish Spirit’) Ht 8-12 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. The Polish Spirit Clematis is a beautiful easy to grow clematis. It blooms heavily with velvety purple flowers in the late summer and fall. This smaller vine will work well in containers, window boxes, or even to climb on a wall.
CLEMATIS, SWEET AUTUMN (Clematis terniflora) Ht 10-20 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A vigorous and fast growing deciduous vine that is native to Japan. It climbs with twisting petioles and twining stems that need support as they can become quite large. It is great for trellises, buildings and training into small trees. Fragrant, 1” four-petaled, cream-white flowers bloom profusely in September through October followed by feathery seed heads. The fragrance is most noticeable in the morning and evening. The flowers on new wood can be heavily pruned after bloom. They can spread by reseeding.
HONEYSUCKLE, DROPMORE (Lonicera x brownii ‘Dropmore Scarlet’) Ht 20 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. A vigorous, twining vine, typically grown on a trellis, or other support. Without support, Dropmore becomes a sprawling, mounding shrub useful as a distinctive groundcover. The fragrant, orange-red blossoms bloom abundantly in June and sporadically throughout the rest of the season. Fast growing.
HONEYSUCKLE, GOLDFLAME (Lonicera heckrotti) Ht 10-20 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Woody vine with blue-green leaves. Light carmine-red buds open to flowers having a yellow corolla and pink outer petals. These fragrant, showy, bi-colored flowers bloom abundantly in June, and sporadically throughout the summer.
HONEYSUCKLE, HALLS (Lonicera japonica ‘Halliana’) Ht 15-30 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. This honeysuckle has a light green foliage that creates a nice backdrop for creamy-white flowers that mature to a pale yellow. The extremely fragrant blossoms appear June through August. This is a fast growing vine, that could be used for climbing on a fence or trellis, or as a groundcover.
HONEYSUCKLE, HECKROTTI (Lonicera tatarica ‘heckrotti’) Ht 8-10 ft, Spd 6-8 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Attractive, dark blue-green foliage on graceful branches. Profuse flower display of fragrant dark red blooms in May, followed by large bright red berries through June and July. Easily grown in any soil. Very effectively used for borders or informal hedges.
IVY, ENGLEMAN (Parthenocissus quinquefolia var. engelmanni) Ht 30-50 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Hardy vine with handsome, dense green foliage that turns bright red in the fall. Blue-black fruit hangs on well into winter. Climbs with its own tendrils, but may need some support. Also make s a good groundcover that spreads quickly. Less vigorous than the species with smaller leaflets.
TRUMPET VINE (Campsis radicans) Ht 20-40 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Vigorous, tropical-looking climber with glossy, dark green, pinnately compounded leaves. Orange to scarlet 3” trumpet-shaped blooms are borne in clusters midsummer. Climbs with clinging tendrils.
WISTERIA, AUNT DEE (Wisteria sinensis ‘Aunt Dee’) Ht 25-30 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Vine with twining branches that can be trained to a trellis. Lavender-purple flowers are borne on one year old wood in drooping 7”-10” racemes in May. Often dies back to frost line for the first three years after planting, but once established will survive -25 degree and bloom the following year. Not a profuse bloomer.
