ORNAMENTAL SHRUBS  NOW WITH PICTURES!!!

ALMOND, DWARF RUSSIAN (Prunus tenella ) ht. 5-6 ft., spd. 4-5 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  Attractive upright shrub with masses of single rose-pink appearing in early spring.  Narrow leaves 1-3” long.  An excellent ornamental shrub for cold climates.  Produces a small disc-shaped fuzzy greenish fruit in fall.  Can be aggressively suckering and would be useful for bank stabilization. 

ALMOND, PINK FLOWERING  (Prunus glandulosa ‘Rosea Plena” ) ht 5-6ft, spd 5-6ft, Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Pink, carnation-like flowers appear all along the stems of this shrub in early spring, followed by bright green leaves.  Use near a house or patio to enjoy the blooms in the spring.

APACHE PLUME (Fallugia paradoxa ) ht. 3-5ft, spd 3-5ft, Full sun to part shade, low water needs (xeric).  Attractive, fine textured, western native shrub.  Excellent choice for dry, sunny locations.  White rose-like spring flowers followed by round, feathery silver-pink seed heads all summer.  Though the foliage is semi evergreen it is inconspicuous throughout the winter.

BARBERRY, BURGUNDY CAROUSEL (Berberis thunbergii ‘Bailtwo’)  Ht. 3-4ft., spd. 4-5ft.  Full sun.  Low to moderate water needs.  This is a selection of Japanese Barberry sporting slightly larger burgundy-purple leaves.  An attractive accent shrub.  Slightly wider than tall spreading habit.

BARBEREY, EMERALD CAROUSEL (Berberis x ‘Tara’ ) ht. 4-5 ft., spd 4-5 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  A cross between Japanese Green Barberry and Korean Barberry introduced by Bailey Nurseries.  A compact plant with glossy dark green foliage.  The outstanding orange to red fall color appears early and remains late before leaves drop.  A better barberry choice for more alkaline sites.

BARBERRY, ROSE GLOW  (Berberis thunbergii ‘Rose Glow’ ) ht. 4-5ft, spd. 4-5ft, Full sun, low to moderate water.  Selection chosen for its unique foliage.  New growth appears with a pink variegation that matures to a darker rose-red. 

BARBERRY, RUBY CAROUSEL (Berberis thunbergii ‘Bailone’ ) ht. 3-3 ½ ft., spd. 3-3 ½ ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  Selected by Bailey Nurseries for uniform habit and red leaf color.  Purple color accent on a compact rounded shrub. 

BROOM, SPANISH GOLD (Cytisus purgans ‘Spanish Gold’)  Ht. 2-3ft., spd. 4-6ft.  Full sun to part shade.  Tight, dense broom with bright yellow flowers in late May to early June.  Selected from the Alpine Gardens and Denver Botanic Gardens.  Native to North Africa and Southern Europe.  Far superior to other brooms available because of minimal winterkill and ability to thrive in heavy soils.  Benefits from some winter water.  Plant select in 2000.

BUCKTHORN, COLUMNAR (Rhamnus frangula ‘ Columnaris’ ) ht. 12-15 ft., spd. 5-6ft. Full Sun, low to moderate water needs.  Tall, columnar shrub with handsome glossy green foliage and purple fruit in late summer.  Yellow fall color.  The unique vertical habit of this shrub makes it great for a dense hedge or screen.  In spite of its name, this shrub is thornless.

BUCKTHORN, SMITH’S (Rhamnus smithii ) ht. 6-10 ft., spd 10-14 ft.  Tolerates full sun, low water needs XERIC.  A native of central Colorado.  Handsome, glossy dark green leaves and black fruits to 1.5” long.  Tolerant of dry conditions.  Golden-yellow fall color.  There is a very nice specimen at Denver Botanic Gardens.  Plant Select designate.

BUCKTHORN, TALLHEDGE GLOSSY (Rhamnus frangula ‘Columnaris’ ) ht. 8-12ft, spd. 3-4ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  These shrubs are multi-stemmed and upright in form with medium texture. They have a dark green, shiny leaf. Flowers have an extremely long bloom time. The fruit is a showy reddish-black to purplish-black. Fall color is yellow

BUFFALOBERRY, SILVER (Shepherdia argentea)  Ht. 10-15ft., spd. 10-12ft.  Full sun.  Low water needs (xeric).  Tree-like shrub with silvery foliage.  The bunch tips are generally thorny.  Its small, edible, orange-red berries can be used to make jelly or left as a treat for birds.  Needs male and female plants to produce fruit.

DWARF BURNING BUSH (Euonymus alata ‘Compactus’ ) ht. 5 ft., spd. 4 ft.,  part shade to full sun,  moderate water needs, deer resistant  Dwarf form of burning bush.  Corky winged branches with brilliant crimson fall color.  Fine for hedges.  You will really enjoy this hardy shrub.

BURNING BUSH, GROVE DWARF (Euonymus alatus ‘Grove Compact’)  Ht.  5-6ft., spd. 5-6ft.  Full sun to part shade.  Low to moderate water needs.  An improved compact burning bush with a more compact mounding form and more showy bark wings.  Brilliant red fall color.

BUTTERFLY BUSH (Buddleia davidii) ht 5 ft, spd: 5 ft.  Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  This shrub is a vigorous grower with large pink flower spikes from July through September.  It is attractive to butterflies.  Tops can die back in northern areas, but will bloom on new wood each year.

BUTTERFLY BUSH, SILVER FOUNTAIN (Buddleia alternifolia ‘Argentea’ ) ht. 8-10 ft., spd 6-8 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  A shrub that does well in a variety of soils and forms a striking vase-shaped mound.  The twigs are long and thin, giving the plant a wide spreading and pendulous habit.  The foliage is blue gray or sometimes silver.  And finely textured.  Fragrant early June flowers are a bright lilac and spiral along the previous year’s branches in candy-cane fashion.  Very attractive to butterflies.  Plant Select winner 1998.

BUTTERFLY BUSH, TRI-COLOR (Buddleia davidii ‘Tri-Color’)  ht 5 ft, spd: 5 ft.  Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  This butterfly bush has white, pink, and purple flowers.

CHERRY, CANADA RED (Prunus virginiana ‘Canada Red’) ht. 20-25ft. spd. 18-20ft., low to moderate water needs(xeric), full to part sun.  New growth is bright green, turning to burgundy-red as the leaves mature.  White flowers in 3”-6” long drooping racemes appear mid-spring followed by small ¼” dark purple fruit.  Fast growing plant that can provide a quick screen and attracts birds.  Easiest to use as a shrub unless suckers are maintained while the tree is young.

CHERRY, NANKING (Prunus tomentosa ) ht. 8-10 ft, spd. 10-15 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  A densely branched large shrub with pubescent green foliage.  Edible red fruit that attracts birds follows showy white spring flowers.  The tan to red-brown bark is exfoliating.  Interesting when used in mass plantings or pruned to a small tree.  A picturesque large shrub that should be used more.

CHOKEBERRY, BLACK (Aronia melanocarpa)  Ht. 5-6ft., spd. 5-6ft.  Full sun to part shade.  Low to moderate water needs.  Small white flowers in May followed by ¼” small black fruits that may persist into winter.  Summer foliage is glossy green turning to a radiant red in fall. 

CHOKEBERRY, PURPLE (Aronia x prunifolia ) Ht. 8-12 ft, spd. 6-10 ft.  Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  A hybrid between A. arbutifolia and A. melanocarpa thought to be naturally occurring.  Displays hybrid vigor, as it grows taller than both its parents.  White flowers bloom in terminal clusters in early May, followed by purple fruit in fall.  Outstanding red fall color

CHOKECHERRY, GREEN (Prunus virginiana) Ht. 15-25 ft., spd. 15-20 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Large native shrub.  Fragrant white flowers in pendulous racemes appear in early May, followed by edible black fruit that attracts birds.  Fast growing plant that spreads by suckers.  Useful as a quick screen. 

CORALBERRY, HANCOCK (Symphoricarpos x chenaultii ‘Hancock’)  Ht. 2-3ft., spd. 6-10ft.  Full sun to part shade.  Low to moderate water needs.  Light, blue-green, fine textured foliage with small, pink spring flowers followed by red berries that hold into winter.  The spreading habit creates an excellent groundcover for erosion control on banks and slopes.  Benefits from aggressive rejuvenations pruning every few years. 

CORALBERRY, RED (Symphoricarpos orbiculatus ) ht. 3-4ft, spd. 4-5ft. Full sun to mostly shade, low to moderate water needs.  Upright, arching growth habit with slender branches.  Profusion of creamy white summer flowers.  Heavily fruited with large clusters of ¼” coral red berries that last all winter.  Good for erosion control, or groundcover.

COTONEASTER, CRANBERRY (Cotoneaster apiculatus ) Ht. 2-3 ft., spd. 5-7 ft.  Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  A cotoneaster with small glossy green leaves on arching branches.  Large red berries in late summer.  Orange-red fall color.  Has a fine texture when in leaf and a coarse silhouette in winter.  Use in masses as a ground cover or as an accent plant.  

COTONEASTER, HEDGE (Cotoneaster lucidus ) ht. 6-8ft.  Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Large shrub with glossy dark green foliage and upright growth.  Black fruits follow small inconspicuous pink spring flowers.  Outstanding orange-red fall color.  Tolerates shade well.  Good Screen or hard hedge that can be pruned for a formal look.  

COTONEASTER, SPREADING (Cotoneaster divaricatus ) ht. 5-6 ft., spd 6-8 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  An ornamental shrub with arching branches.  Summer leaf color is an attractive, glossy dark green.  Fall color can be a striking combination of yellow, orange, and red.  Small pink flowers appear in late spring but tend to be hidden behind the leaves.  The small bright red fruit ripens in September and persists into late fall.  Useful as a screen or large hedge.

COTONEASTER, SZECHUAN FIRE (Cotoneaster ignavus ) ht. 6-8 ft., spd 4-6 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. An extremely hardy cotoneaster with dark red ¼” fruit. The leaves are heavily pubescent, giving them a blue cast.  Yellow fall color.  Selected from the USDA Experimental Station in Cheyenne, WY and a favorite of Mr. Howard who was a superintendent of the station.  A great hardy cotoneaster.

CREAMBUSH (Holodiscus discolor)  Ht. 5-7ft., spd. 6-8ft.  Full sun.  Low water needs (xeric).  Northwest native plant with creamy white flowers in panicles, blooming in midsummer.  Erect to arching basal stems with reddish brown exfoliating bark.  Hairy leaves are light green, broadly ovate and coarsely toothed.  Flowers have a sweet aromatic cream-like scent.  Reddish tan seed heads in fall.  The wood had many uses for the native peoples of the Northwest, as well as the flowers, which were used medicinally.  Drought resistant, but if given regular water may get larger that the listed size. 

CURRANT, ALPINE (Ribes alpinum ) ht. 3-5 ft., spd 3-5 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Compact rounded bush excellent for small hedges or as a backdrop for flowers.  Requires very little shearing to maintain a neat, tidy appearance. Glossy dark green summer foliage.

CURRANT, CRANDALL CLOVE (Ribes odoratum ‘Crandall’ ) ht. 4-6 ft, spd. 4-6 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (xeric).  Native shrub with yellow trumpet-shaped flowers.  The flowers have a strong clove fragrance.  Black ½”- ¾” fruits ripen in mid-July with a sweet spicy flavor.  Light green tri-lobed foliage turns orange in fall.   

CURRANT, GOLDEN (Ribes aureum) Ht. 1-2 ft., spd. 1-2 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (xeric).  Cinnamon-scented, yellow flowers in May.  Green, lobed leaves turn scarlet in fall.  Makes a nice accent or hedge.

CURRANT, GWEN’S BUFFALO (Ribes aureum ‘Gwen’s Buffalo’ ) ht. 5-6 ft, spd. 5-6 ft. Full sun to part shade, low water needs (xeric).  A selection of the Rocky Mountain native with an improved fruiting habit.  Very fragrant yellow blooms appear in May followed by black teardrop-shaped edible fruit.  Fall color is a fine orange to red.  Tolerates dry conditions. 

CURRANT, JOSTABERRY (Ribes x ‘Jostaberry’) Full sun, a cross between the black currant and the gooseberry, made in Germany.  The fruit is twice the size of the currant and intermediate in flavor between the two parents.  A very vigorous, thornless plant that is resistant to white pine blister rust. 

CURRANT, RED LAKE (Ribes sativum ‘Red Lake’) ht: 5-6 ft, spd: 3-4 ft.  Full sun to part shade, low water needs (xeric).  Medium sized red berries in long, easy to pick clusters ripen in July to mid August.  Vigorous, high yielding variety that produces fruit on 2-3 year woods.  Great for jams, jellies, pies, or fresh for those who like tart fruit.  Best fruit production in full sun.

Cranberry Cotoneaster

 

DOGWOOD, BAILEY REDTWIG (Cornus sericea var. ‘baileyi’ ) ht. 8-10 ft, spd. 8-10 ft. Full sun to part shade, moderate water needs.  A large shrub with medium green foliage and dense, upright growth.  Blue-black fruits follow cream white late spring flowers.  Stems turn a showy burgundy in winter.  Burgundy-red fall color.  Good screen or hardy hedge that can be clipped for a formal look.

DOGWOOD, GRAY (Cornus racemosa ) ht. 10-15 ft, spd. 10-15 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Compact tree with round head.  Creamy white flowers in early June.  The attractive 0.25” white fruit, which drops in fall, leaves bright red pedicels that persist into winter.  The fruit pedicels contrast well with the distinctive gray bark.  Fine burgundy fall color. Tolerates alkaline soils.  

DOGWOOD, ISANTI (Cornus sericea ‘Isanti’ ) ht. 5-6 ft, spd. 8-10 ft. Full sun to part shade, moderate water needs. It is a denser and lower growing dogwood than the Bailey Redtwig with the same bright red stems in winter.  Creamy white flowers bloom in late spring, followed by abundant white fruit.  Fall color is a dark purple-red.  This combination makes for a striking winter silhouette. 

DOGWOOD, IVORY HALO (Cornus alba ‘Bailhalo’ ) ht. 5-6 ft., spd. 5-6 ft. Part Shade, moderate water needs. A selection of Variegated Dogwood with the same attractive variegation and winter twig color but has a more compact form.

DOGWOOD, YELLOWTWIG (Cornus sericea ‘Flaviramea’ ) ht 6-8 ft. spd. 8-10 ft. Part shade, moderate water needs.  Dogwood with bight yellow branches in winter.  Clusters of white flowers in late spring followed by a white fruit.  Summer foliage is dark glossy green turning reddish-purple in fall.  Needs protection from winter sun.

DOGWOOD, VARIEGATED (Cornus alba ‘Argenteo Marginata’)  Ht. 6-8ft., spd. 5-8ft.  Part shade to shade.  Moderate water needs.  Dogwood with showy variegated green and white foliage.  Stems turn blood red in winter.  Creamy white flowers appear in late May to early June.  Does best in moist shady areas or eastern exposures, does not tolerate full sun well. All the red stemmed dogwoods require pruning of the oldest branches to ensure vibrant winter color.

ELDERBERRY, GOLDEN (Sambucus canadensis ‘Aurea’ ) ht. 8-12 ft., spd 8-12 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs.  Rapidly growing shrub with bright golden foliage.  Fragrant, white, flat-headed flower clusters in early summer, followed by black, juicy, edible fruits. Good shrub for fast screening and color contrast.  Fruit is great for jelly, wine, and for wildlife but requires more than one plant for pollination and fruit set.

EYUONOMUS, MANHATTAN (Euonymus kiautschovicus ‘Manhattan’ ) ht. 4-6 ft, spd. 4-6 ft, Full to part shade, low to moderate water.  Upright growing evergreen shrub with very glossy, dark green, 2”-2.5” leaves, which are larger that those of other evergreen Euonymus.  Moderate to fast grower.  Needs to be planted in location protected from winter sun.  

FERNBUSH (Chamaebatiaria millefolium ) ht. 4-6 ft., spd. 4-6 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs XERIC.  Small gray-green pinnately compound foliage gives a fine texture to this delicately aromatic, drought tolerant plant. Small white flower clusters in upright panicles appear throughout the summer.  Blooms late into fall.  During severe winters, may die to snow line, but will quickly grow back.

FORSYTHIA, NOTHERN GOLD (Forsythia x ‘Northern Gold’ ) ht. 6-8 ft, spd. 5-7 ft, Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Upright form. Outstanding yellow flowers with excellent bud hardiness.  Lower growing than other Forsythias.

FORSYTHIA, SPRING GLORY (Forsythia x intermedia ‘Spring Glory’) Ht. 8ft., spd 5ft.  Full sun.  Low to moderate water needs.  Vigorous shrub with small, yellow blooms on upright branches in early spring before leafing out.

Bailey Redtwig Dogwood

 

HOLLY, CREEPING OREGON GRAPE  (Mahonia repens ) ht. 12-18 ft, spd. 3-4 ft, Full to part shade, low to moderate water needs. This Rocky Mountain native makes an excellent groundcover, spreading through underground stolons.  Evergreen leaves turn red in fall and make wonderful Christmas decorations.  Yellow flowers appear in late May to June followed by blue berries.

HONEYSUCKLE, ARNOLD RED (Lonicera tatarica ‘Arnold Red’ ) ht. 8-10 ft, spd. 6-8 ft, Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Attractive, dark blue-green foliage on graceful branches.  Profuse flower display of fragrant dark red blooms in May, followed by large bright red berries through June and July.  Easily grown in any soil.  Very effectively used for borders or informal hedges.

HONEYSUCKLE, BLUE VELVET (Lonicera korolkowii ‘Floribunda’ ) ht. 8-10 ft, spd. 8-12 ft., Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  An experiment from the Cheyenne station that is very, very hardy.  Pubescent light blue foliage in spring matures to gray-green. Pale pink flowers bloom in profusion during May to early June.  Plant select winner in 1999.

HONEYSUCKLE, CLAVEY’S DWARF (Lonicera x xylosteoides ‘Clavey’s Dwarf’ ) ht. 6 ft., spd. 4 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Yellow flowers in May, red berries in fall, good compact foliage.  Makes a good hedge.

HONEYSUCKLE, DROPMORE (Lonicera x brownii ‘Dropmore Scarlet’ ) ht. 20 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  A vigorous, twining vine, typically grown on a trellis, or other support.  Without support, Dropmore becomes a sprawling, mounding shrub useful as a distinctive groundcover.  The fragrant, orange-red blossoms bloom abundantly in June and sporadically throughout the rest of the season.  Fast growing.

HONEYSUCKLE, DWARF BUSH (Diervilla Ionicera ) ht. 3-4 ft, spd. 3-4 ft, Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Dwarf mounding shrub with handsome foliage.  Throughout the season this is a multi-colored plant with the leaves emerging a reddish-purple, then turning green as they mature.  No known insect or disease problems.  Reddish-purple fall color.  Small yellow flowers add additional interest during early summer.  Excellent for mass planting and slopes.

HONEYSUCKLE, EMERLAD MOUND (Lonicera xylosteum ‘Emerald Mound’) Ht. 2-4ft., spd. 4-6ft.  Full sun to part shade.  Low to moderate water needs.  Shrub with low arching branches forming a compact mound.  Insignificant pale yellow flowers are followed by attractive dark red berries in fall.  Dark green leaves appear very early in spring.  No significant fall color.  Excellent in foundations plantings or as a ground cover.

Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Attractive, dark blue-green foliage on graceful branches.  Profuse flower display of fragrant dark red blooms in May, followed by large bright red berries through June and July.  Easily grown in any soil.  Very effectively used for borders or informal hedges.

HONEYSUCKLE, HONEYROSE  ht. 8-10 ft.,  spd. 8-10 ft.,  part shade to full sun, low to moderate water needs.  Dark green foliage, light red flowers in spring followed by red berries.  Yellow brown fall color.

HONEYSUCKLE, TINY TRUMPETS (Lonicera syringantha wolfii ) ht. 3-6 ft., spd. 6-9 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. A dense, finely branched shrub with a horizontal growth habit.  The narrow blue-green leaves contrast nicely with the red stem color of new growth.  Extremely fragrant pale violet flowers are borne in clusters in late spring.  A plant worth growing for its sweet flowers. 

HYDRANGEA, ANABELLE (Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ ) ht. 3-5 ft., spd 3-6 ft.  Tolerates full to part shade, low to moderate water needs. Dense shrub with large medium green leaves and stout stems creating a coarse texture.  Huge, 12” wide globe-shaped clusters of flowers, opening pale green and maturing to white, are borne July through Sept.  Generally dies to the ground and should be pruned just above the soil in late fall or early spring.  Prefers well-drained soil.

IVE, ENGLEMAN (Parthenocissus quinquefolia var. engelmanni)  Ht. 30-50ft.  Full sun to part shade.  Low to moderate water needs.  Hardy vine with handsome, dense green foliage that turns bright red in the fall.  Blue-black fruit hangs on well into winter.  Climbs with its own tendrils, but may need some support.  Also make s a good groundcover that spreads quickly.  Less vigorous than the species with smaller leaflets.

JUNIPER, BAR HARBOR (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Bar Harbor’ ) ht. 6-12 in., spd 6-10 ft.  Full sun, low water needs (xeric).  A low growing spreading form that hugs the ground.  Summer foliage is a soft gray-blue becoming a silvery plum color in winter. 

JUNIPER, BLUE POINT (Juniperus chinensis ‘Blue Point’) Ht: 8-12 ft. Spd: 4-6 ft. Full sun, low water needs (xeric).  Keeps its natural broad, pyramidal shape without shearing.  Reaches a height of about half of most other uprights

JUNIPER, BLUE CHIP (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Blue Chip’ ) ht. 8-12 in., spd 6-10 ft.  Full sun, low water needs (xeric).  Blue foliage on a prostrate spreader with a high center.  The branchlets are upright giving a more feathery appearance.  The winter color is an attractive silvery plum-purple.

JUNIPER, CALGARY CARPET (Juniperus Sabina ‘Monna’) Ht: 1-2 ft., Spd: 6-10 ft. Full sun. Low water needs (xeric).  A low growing broad spreading selection with light green, feathery foliage.  The branches radiate out from the center of the plant creating a spray effect.  “Sierra Spreader” is another common name.

JUNIPER, COMPACT PFITZER (Juniperus chinensis ‘Pfiteriana Compacta’) Ht. 3-4 ft. Spd: 6-12 ft. Full sun. JUNIPER, OLD GOLD (Juniperus chinensis ‘Old Gold’ ) ht. 3-4 ft., spd. 6-12 ft.  Full sun, low water needs (xeric).  A juniper with a compact form, which also boasts a slight graceful arching to the tips of the branches.  New growth has a bright golden-yellow color that deepens in the winter.  Full sun will result in its best color.

Full sun, low to moderate water needs.  A ninebark selected for bright maroon leaf color.  Cream white flowers accent the red-purple foliage in early summer.  Needs full sun for best foliage color.  Its upright arching habit and leaf color make this an excellent plant for a hedge of a shrub border.

PLUM, AMERICAN (Prunus americana ) ht. 10-12 ft., spd. 10-12 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Small native tree or large shrub with very fragrant 1” white flowers that open before leaves emerges in early April.  1” yellow to red fruit ripens in August and can be used for jams or jellies. Can be grown as a large multi-stem shrub or a single stem small tree.  Will tolerant dry alkaline soils, and thrives on neglect.  In the wild it suckers and spreads to form lovely drifting colonies. 

PLUM, DOUBLE FLOWERING (Prunus triloba ) ht. 6-10 ft. spd 10-12 ft. Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Beautiful and abundant double pink flowers to 1” in April and May make this plant a crowd pleaser.  Often confused with the Pink Flowering Almond, but Double Flowering Plum is a larger plant with larger, darker pink flowers.  Prefers well drained soils.  Can be pruned into an attractive small tree

SAGE, RUSSIAN (Perovskia atriplicifolia ) ht. 3-5 ft., spd 3-5 ft. Full sun, low to moderate water needs.  Herbaceous shrub with downy silvery-green foliage.  Bright blue-violet flower spikes appear August through September.  Quite showy, especially when used in masses. Needs to be pruned back to live wood in early spring.  Tolerant of alkaline soils. 

SAGE, SILVER (Artemisia cana ) ht. 2-5 ft, spd. 2-3 ft, Full sun to part shade, low water needs (xeric).  Small mounding shrub with stout, upright branches that my become gnarled with age.  Leaves are 1-3” long, slender, and light gray in color.  Yellow flowers appear in late summer.  A Colorado native of mountain meadows.

SAGE, TALL WESTERN (Artemisia (seriphidium) tridentata ) ht. 3-10 ft., spd 3- 6 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs XERIC. Native to the Rocky Mountain region.  Silver-gray foliage on dull gray branches.  The bark becomes exfoliating as plant ages.  Yellow flowers bloom in August.  Tolerates dry conditions and poor soil.  An interesting hardy accent plant.  Very aromatic foliage.

SANDCHERRY, PAWNEE BUTTES (Prunus besseyi ‘Pawnee Buttes’ ) ht. 12-18 inches., spd. 6-8 ft. Tolerates full sun, low to moderate water needs. Differs from the species in that is has a low, creeping form.  Parent plant was discovered near Pawnee Buttes in eastern Colorado.  Plant Select 2000.

SANDCHERRY, WESTERN (Prunus besseyi ) ht. 5-6 ft, spd. 5-6 ft, Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Masses of single white flowers in May are followed by edible ¾” black cherries, great for attracting birds.  Showy glossy silver-green foliage turns to a soft red in fall.  Prefers hot, dry conditions.

SERVICEBERRY,  AUTUMN BRILLIANCE (Amelanchier x grandiflora ‘Autumn Brilliance’ ) ht. 15-20 ft, spd 10-15 ft, Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Rounded growth habit with moderately spreading branches.  Clusters of showy white flowers appear in April, followed by a tasty purplish-black fruit.  Fall color is bright orange-red.  Strong branching resists ice and snow breakage.  Can be grown in a small single stem, or attractive multi-stemmed tree.

SERVICEBERRY, SASKATOON (Amelanchier alnifolia ) ht, 10-12 ft, spd 6-8 ft, Full sun to part shade, low water needs (xeric).  Elegant mountain native with billowy cluster of white flowers in spring followed by edible blueberry-like fruit.  Green foliage turns yellow to red in fall.  Good for attracting birds.  Can be grown as a large shrub or multi-stemmed small tree.  A good specimen for dry, alkaline, soils.

SERVICEBERRY, SHADBLOW (Amelanchier canadensis ) ht. 6-20+ ft.  spd 8-12 ft, Full sun to part shade,  low water needs.  Large shrub or small tree.  There is a great variation in size within the species.  Showy white flowers appear in early spring before foliage.  Purplish-black berries were favorites of Native American tribes.  Good yellow to red fall color.

SPIREA, CHEYENNE SNOWMOUND (Spiraea nipponica var. tosaensis )  ht. 3-5 ft, spd. 3-5 ft, Full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Similar to “Snowmound” with slightly smaller flowers and larger leaves.  The hardiest of all the nipponicas.  Survived well at the Cheyenne station.

SUMAC, CUTLEAF (Rhus typhina ‘Laciniata’ ) ht. 6-8 ft. spd. 12-16 ft.  Full sun, low water needs (xeric).  Form of Staghorn Sumac with attractive, deeply cut leaves creating a fine textured look.  Orange to red fall color.  Tolerant of alkaline soils.

SUMAC, FRAGRANT (Rhus aromatica ) ht. 6 ft., spd. 5 ft. Full sun, low water needs (xeric).  Aromatic shrub with small, yellow flowers in May, followed by small red berries.  Brilliant, Autumn foliage.

SUMAC, GRO-LOW (Rhus aromatica ‘Gro-Low’ ) ht. 2-3 ft., spd. 6-8 ft. Tolerates full sun, low water needs XERIC.  Tiny, inconspicuous yellow flowers in May are followed by small red berries.  Brilliant scarlet to orange autumn foliage.  Leaves have a pungent citrus-like fragrance.  Its low, spreading form and fast growth rate make this plant excellent for mass plantings as a ground cover, or for erosion control.

Tolerates full sun, low water needs XERIC.  Native shrub with shiny dark green leaves turning brilliant red in fall.  Decorative red fruit.  A western sub-species that grows to only half the height of the species.  This hardy plant suckers to form colonies making it a great groundcover.

SUMAC, SMOOTH (Rhus glabra) Ht: 10-12 ft. Spd: 6-10 ft. Full sun, low water needs (xeric).  Very similar to Staghorn Sumac except the leaves and branches are not pubescent. More shrubby than other sumacs.  Brilliant red leaves and velvety dark red fruits in autumn.  Tolerates alkaline soils.  They will spread making them well suited for group plantings.

Tolerates full sun, low water needs XERIC.  Large compounded leaves give this plant a tropical look.  Pyramidal clusters of velvety crimson fruits appear in late August and persist into winter.  The branches are covered with dense, velvety hair and resemble stag’s horns, giving rise to the common name.  The fall color is a brilliant red. Spreads by suckers.

Tolerates full sun, low water needs XERIC.  Very hardy native shrub of the Rocky Mountains.  Three-lobed dark green leaves turn red to orange in the fall.  Bright red berries follow dainty yellow flowers. VINE, TRUMPET (Campsis radicans ) ht. 20-40 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Vigorous, tropical-looking climber with glossy, dark green, pinnately compounded leaves.  Orange to scarlet 3” trumpet-shaped blooms are borne in clusters midsummer.  Climbs with clinging tendrils.   

WEIGELA, DROPMORE PINK (Weigela florida ‘Dropmore Pink’ ) ht. 4-6 ft., spd. 4-6 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  A hardy weigela introduction form the Morden Research Station in Canada.  Dark green summer foliage and trumpet-shaped rose pink flowers in June.  Has proven, so far, to be the hardiest weigela in our tests.

WEIGELA, WINE & ROSES (Weigela floria ‘Alexandra’ PP10772)  Ht. 4-5ft., spd 3-5ft. Full sun.  Low to moderate water needs.  A low growing rounded shrub.  Notable for its very dark burgundy-purple foliage.  Dark pink flowers show off against the foliage in early summer. 

WILLOW, DWARF ARTIC (Salix purpurea ‘Nana’ ) Ht 6-8 ft. Spd. 6-10 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, moderate water needs.  This shrub has a rounded, dense form with linear gray-green foliage.  They have supple, slender stems that are purplish in color when young.  Branches turn reddish as they mature providing winter interest.  This makes an attractive hedge plant.

WILLOW, FRENCH PUSSY (Salix caprea ) ht. 15-20 ft., spd. 8-12 ft. Tolerates full sun, moderate water needs.  Hardy upright shrub best known for large silvery catkins which appear before the leaves in the spring and are used for indoor decoration.  Grows best in moist soils, but once established, does well on drier sites.  Fast growing.  Makes good privacy hedge.

WISTERIA, AUNT DEE (Wisteria sinensis ‘Aunt Dee’) Ht: 25-30 ft. Tolerates full sun to part shade, low to moderate water needs.  Vine with twining branches that can be trained to a trellis.  Lavender-purple flowers are borne on one year old wood in drooping 7”-10” racemes in May.  Often dies back to frost line for the first three years after planting, but once established will survive  -25 degree and bloom the following year.  Not a profuse bloomer.

YUCCA, SOAPWEED (Yucca glauca ) ht. 2-3 ft., spd. 3 ft.  Tolerates full sun, low water needs XERIC.  Native plant of the Rocky Mountains.  Sharp-pointed, narrow, bluish-green leaves with curling fibers on leaf margins.  Greenish white flowers bloom in spring on 3’ to 4’ spikes
